The Maine Coon cat, the state cat of Maine, is a majestic and fascinating breed known for its large size, friendly demeanor, and striking appearance. These gentle giants are characterized by their tufted ears, long bushy tails, and expressive eyes. Maine Coons are highly intelligent, playful and make wonderful companions for individuals and families alike. Their affectionate nature and sociable personality make them great pets for households with children or other animals. Their thick, water-repellent fur and tufted paws (snow-shoe like) made these majestic felines well equipped to handle the colder climates and harsh winters in New England and makes their coats very unique!
Consider adding a Maine Coon to your family for a loyal and loving feline companion that will surely bring joy and warmth to your home.

Maine Coons are often referred to as gentle giants, and this is a well-earned name. They are playful and love to be involved in family activities. They are known for remarkable intelligence and many dog-like traits. They are loyal, warm and love to cuddle up with their favorite person!

Maine Coons are typically between 9-12 lbs for females and 13 - 18 lbs for males. That being said, we have mixed breeds that are bigger than that! Their impressive size lies within their length and height. Maine Coon’s can grow to 16 inches tall and 40 inches long. To put this in perspective, domestic shorthair cats can grow up to 10 inches tall and 15 inches long!

Maine Coon coat maintenance will be the same as any other longhair cat’s needs. We bathe our cats weekly, but regular combing may be enough to keep your cat’s coat lovely and clean. The most important thing is that you do your best to prevent matting in your cat’s coat!

Odd-eyed cats or heterochromia happens in both humans and animals. and refers to the iris of each eye being a different color. This is caused by the genetic make-up of the cat and gives them a very distinctive look!
Check out Xavier's page to see a great example!

"Polydactyl" comes from Greek and means "many toes." While polydactyl cats have at least one extra toe (usually on their front feet), they can have several!
The extra toes tend to give the cat better dexterity and balance and make them better at climbing. We have definitely seen this from our own "spider monkey", Guinevere!
-
Hip dysplasia is a genetic condition that can affect the formation of a cat's hip joint. It's important to note that it is a manageable issue, with many tests available to diagnose it and a variety of treatments tailored to each cat’s needs.
At Maine Coon Castle, we prioritize the health of our cats by routinely checking for hip dysplasia as part of our breeding program. This helps us minimize the risk of passing this condition on to future generations.
Most importantly, cats diagnosed with hip dysplasia can still enjoy long, fulfilling lives. Being informed about the signs of this condition and consulting with a knowledgeable veterinarian will ensure that your Maine Coon receives the best care possible, allowing them to thrive as a beloved member of your family.
